Oscar Pistorius (Double Amputee Olympic 400m runner) shoots and kills his girlfriend

Did double amputee Olympian, Oscar Pistorius, seriously kill his girlfriend?

At this very moment, this seems to be the case! All I’m thinking right now, is “WHOA!”
According to Huffington Post,

A woman has been found dead in the home of South African paralympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius.

According to Reuters, Pistorius is being questioned by South African police about the incident. Domestic media reports say the victim is Pistorius’ girlfriend, though the woman’s name has not yet been released.

Police spokesperson Captain Sarah Mcirca confirmed that the victim was shot in the arm and the head, USA today reported.

Pistorius, 26, who was born without a fibula in both legs, was the first double amputee to run in the Olympics. Nicknamed the “Blade Runner,” Pistorius was able to compete by wearing carbon fiber prosthetic blades.

If Oscar Pistorius really did kill his girlfriend, this is such sad news!

It’s sad news on so many levels!

Firstly: The death of anyone at any time is horrible. In my opinion, no one deserves to have their life taken for any reason against their own will. What makes it worse is that Oscar Pistorius is such a role model for not just the disabled athlete population, but for athletes everywhere! Pistorius is such a role model being the first double amputee to ever be good enough to run with the best of them on the biggest Track & Field stage in the world, The Olympics. I can’t speculate as to why Oscar Pistorius may have shot and killed his girlfriend, but I can definitely say that no reason–aside from self defense–can be justified here. Also, given the type of wounds she sustained, I don’t think self defense is plausible.

Secondly: As a former high school and collegiate 400m runner, this just bothers me. Watching Oscar Pistorius run the 400m dash prior to the 2012 Olympics and at the 2012 Olympics was so exciting! I know how tough it is to run the race at the elite level, and for a double amputee like Pistorius to do it consistently always amazed me. Given all these shootings lately, I’m seriously starting to lose a bit of faith in humanity. I’d like to think that athletes, especially high-profile athletes, would take their position more seriously and try to do no harm!

My condolences go out to Oscar Pistorius’ girlfriend’s family, and I’m anxiously awaiting to see this story of a double amputee 400m runner gone rogue unfold…
